  • The thing about school...

    Oct 30, 2017

School (as it exists today) was invented at the advent of the industrial revolution (1893). Corporations at the time loved the idea that through influencing the school system standards, they could insure that each potential employee was being prepared in the very same way.

Our system completely lacks individuality. There is minimal choice in course work, and the expectations are pretty much the same upon each student.

If you were visit a new school or inquiry for a child you’d hear things like:

    • 95% of our students go to college
    • 3.5 average GPA
    • 6 perfect ACT scores
    • 100+ students with a 4.0+ GPA
      etc.

Since these are the targeted metrics, the curriculum, and scheduling will follow. Everything will be test, grade, and outcome driven.

    • Teachers - make sure all your students do well on their tests and get good grades.
    • Advisors - make sure all your students are going to college.
    • Administrators - standardized tests scores must be satisfactory.
    • Parents - get good grades, go to a good college, get a good job

Who is stepping back and asking, “student, what are your dreams, hopes, and goals?”

So here we are - student, what are your dreams, hopes, and goals, let’s step back and answer some of these questions. THEN we will see how all the rest of these things fit into your life.
